There are two basic forms of playing golf: match play and stroke play

Match Play - when two player or teams play holes as a separate contest. The lowest score for the hole wins the contest for that hole. The game is won by which team wins the most holes won. If the lead is so great that it can not be overcome, the match is won and the game is over.

It works out that when the lead is equal to the number of holes remaining the term "dormie” (i.e., 3 holes up with 3 holes to play), is used because one of the players achieves a lead that matches the holes remaining. The player who is trailing can only hope to tie in regulation, but cannot win. When a golf match reaches this "dormie” state, it is said to have "gone dormie." The golfer in the lead has "taken the match dormie."

Then the game is continued until the leader increases his lead by one hole ... thereby winning the match or until the match ends in a tie. If the game is tied, the game may continue until one side gains a one-hole lead. That ends the match

Stroke Play - when every player or team counts the number of shots taken for a total score. The lowest score for the round or tournament wins.
